Deaf History: Celebrations in December

December 26, 1785: Laurent Clerc's Birthday
Laurent Clerc was America's first deaf teacher, having helped Thomas Gallaudet found America's first school for the deaf, American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817.

December 16, 1817: Eliza Young's Birthday
Eliza Young, who was deaf, was the wife of William Willard, also deaf. He was the first deaf person to found a school for the deaf: the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis (1843). She was considered a co-founder of the school too.

December 9, 1861: KSD was Founded
Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD) became the first school for the deaf established in the state of Kansas in 1861...and today it remains the largest.
