Samuil's Fortress is considered one of the largest preserved fortifications in Macedonia. It was first mention by the historian Titus Livius in the III century BC, while he was a fortress city Lychnidos.
As early as the fifth century AD Ohrid is mentioned by Roman historians as a city of forts, which like other Roman towns in the Balkans defending from naezdite of the wandering tribes in the great resettlement of peoples of the IV and V century. Zakrepeniot Ohrid in 479 rejected the siege of the Gothic King Theodoric the Great.
