Yellowstone is the only place in the lower 48 states to have a continuously free-ranging bison population since prehistoric times. Males can weigh up to 2000 lbs and females up to 1000 lbs. Bison bcame nearly extinct in the 1800's because of hunting and by 1902 were reduce to about 2 dozen. Now protected by the US Army they have grown to close to 5000.
