The holdings by the bald eagle, which originally occurred in large parts of North America, declined since the 19th century, the lowest number of breeding pairs were counted in the 1960's. This was due to firings, the consequences of the use of DDT and habitat changes. First legal decrees to protect the bald eagle there in the early 20th century, which were tightened in the coming years and on. After the banning of DDT, which had an impact biomagnify strongly on the ability of bald eagles, great to draw young, the stocks rebounded.
