The peony (Paeonia), also called peonies, are the only genus of the family of peony plants (Paeoniaceae).

Peonies are mostly herbaceous plants, rare woody subshrubs or small shrubs. The small group halbstrauchiger Chinese species known as "bush" or "Tree Peony" form to about 2.5 meters long stems that become woody. All Paeonia species and cultivars are summer green. They form as Überdauerungsorgane durable, fairly woody rhizomes with thickened roots. The germination of seeds is done hypogeous.
