Near the Reykjanes peninsula and the Hengill volcanic area, is Iceland’s largest natural lake, Þingvallavatn. Sitting at it’s northern end is Þingvellir (Thing Fields) a site of historical, cultural and geological importance in Iceland, which lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In 1928 Þingvellir became Iceland’s first national park, “a protected national shrine for all Icelanders, the perpetual property of the Icelandic nation under the preservation of the parliament, never to be sold or mortgaged” and as you can see, it’s stunning!
