Another view of the Appalachian mountainside. The Appalachian mountain range stretches up and down the eastern part of North America. The Appalachian mountains formed roughly 480 million years ago during the Ordovician Period. Creatures like mollusks and arthropods dominated the oceans during this period before the Ordovician-Silurian extinction event.
