Owl Butterfly

Colorado's Butterfly Pavilion is home to approximately 1,200 butterflies at any given time. It was here that I got this photo of this Owl Butterfly. Native to the rainforests of Mexico, Central, and South America, they can grow to nearly eight inches. This particular guy, however, was probably only half that size. The function of the owl eye-like pattern on the wings is disputed, but it is known that small animals tend to avoid patterns resembling eyes like those on the owl butterfly's wings.
