Esperance, Western Australia, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and coastline I've ever seen. Twilight Beach is the most famous of the white-sand beaches within a few minutes of Esperance, but I preferred Blue Haven. This picture is wonderfully representative of the coastline in the area for miles in any direction. The remoteness of Esperance (it's roughly an 8 hour drive from Perth, the only city of more than 70,000 people in Western Australia) means that visitors can easily find solitude on beaches that, were they in Southern California, or for that matter, the East coast of Australia, would have roughly the same number of surfers present on a typical Tuesday as grains of sand.
