Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, its metropolis  and its largest urban, cultural, economic and transportation center, the capital of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the headquarters of the Sarajevo Canton.
According to the 1991 census, the town had 416,497 and has an estimated population of 304,614 in 2008, while the whole area of Sarajevo has 421,289 inhabitants, including all municipalities of Sarajevo Canton .
