Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was only established as a National Park in 2004 – prior to that, it had been a National Monument. When I awoke in my tent, a stone's throw from the base of the dunes, I looked outside and was initially unhappy with the weather. I'd hoped to get some colorful sunrise shots, but what greeted me was the most dull, gray sky imaginable. I got up anyway, and went for a bit of a walk amongst the dunes. It had actually snowed a miniscule amount the night before, and this, in combination with the wind, made for some beautiful, if rather bleak sights. Although I converted this photo to black and white, the original, color shot is barely recognizable as being something other than black and white.
